When you compare invisible grill quotes, you will see two steel grades mentioned: SS 304 and SS 316. They look the same on day one. The difference shows up after a few monsoons.
What is the difference?
Both are austenitic stainless steels made mainly of iron, chromium and nickel. SS 316 also contains molybdenum, which makes it much more resistant to chlorides, the salts found in sea air and coastal humidity. That is why SS 316 is often called “marine grade”.
Why it matters in Mumbai
Mumbai is a coastal city. Salt in the air, heavy monsoon rain and high humidity for much of the year are exactly the conditions where SS 304 can develop small brown rust spots, often called tea staining. SS 316 handles these conditions far better, so the grill stays clean and strong for longer.
- Near the sea or a creek: SS 316 is strongly recommended.
- High floors exposed to wind and rain: SS 316 is the safer choice.
- Indoor or fully covered areas: SS 304 can work, but the saving is small compared to the risk.
Does nylon coating help?
Yes. A nylon coating over the wire adds a protective layer, gives a smoother finish and makes the wire easier to clean. It works best on top of a good base steel. Coating cannot fix a low-grade wire underneath.
Other things to check
- Tensile strength: ask for the rated strength per wire. We use wire rated at 350 kg and above.
- Wire thickness: about 2 mm is common for a near-invisible look with good strength.
- Fittings: fasteners and stiffeners should also be stainless steel, or they will rust first. See SS fasteners and stiffeners.
- Track: a strong aluminium track keeps the wires straight and tight.
